Puerto Penasco is just over four hours by car from either Tucson or Phoenix. At this time, the only air service is by private plane or charter. Since it's in a free zone, no visas/Tourist Card or immunizations are required. Border officials may conduct routine spot checks of vehicles entering Mexico, which usually takes only a few minutes.

Mexican auto insurance is highly recommended. You can purchase it at insurance agencies in Phoenix, Tucson, Ajo, and Lukeville or at the two service stations in Why on the way to Mexico. It's also sold online and though it's best to have insurance prior to crossing the border, you can purchase it through various other agencies just across the border in Sonoyta, as well as in Rocky Point.

Once you cross the border, you're in the town of Sonoyta.  You will find some wonderful restaurants, unique curio shops, and several pharmacies in Sonoyta.

From Sonoyta a straight, well-paved road leads directly to Rocky Point (also called Puerto Penasco), which is located about 65 miles southwest. If you are up for an adventure, you can travel about 30 miles South of Sonoyta, where you will find a small, unpaved road  that leads off to the right - you can follow this road to the Pinacate National Park and Wildlife Refuge. This is where the U.S. Apollo astronauts trained for moon landings.

In addition to the information we've provided here, once you've booked your stay at our wonderful Condo, we'll send you a more detailed map and traveling instructions via email.
